ID Card with Microsoft Tag gives access to online data

Microsoft Tags have a wide range of uses, allowing any smartphone to read a tag. Tags are particularly useful when printed on ID cards, allowing the physical card to give access to virtual data held in the cloud and constantly updated.

To get the free Microsoft Tag Reader, just visit http://gettag.mobi on your mobile phone browser. Then, you can scan the sample tags below to see how it works – directly from the images on the screen!

In the sample below, the photo ID card allows for the real-time verification of EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) credentials. This would allow, for example, a medical center to check that the individual’s training coursework is up to date. Or an on-site incident commander can verify the qualifications of a first responder if particular skills are required. The tags can be pre-set for open availability, allowing anyone to view the data they are linked to. Or, they can be pre-set to protect data access via a password.

Anyone with the app in their phone will be able to use their camera to read the tag above, either from the actual Photo ID card, or from the image on the screen. They will immediately receive the following message in their phone, which comes from the InstantCard server’s data base storing information associated with each ID card issued:

The InstantCard system allows up to 5 different tags on a card. As an example, one tag can provide access to training records, and the other tag can provide access to emergency medical information. Click here to see Microsoft’s guidlines on “best practices” for implementing Microsoft Tags.
